Welcome!

These Web pages were created with three goals in mind:
  1. To document my own attempt at constructing a great pair of loudspeakers.
  2. To aid those who have similar aspirations.
  3. As yet another creative outlet for the summer since the god of internships decided not to smile upon me.

In the Beginning...
So there I was, without a job for the summer - but still I yearned for a new set of speakers. I may have had an internship completely lined up, but this meant nothing to the unfeeling tech market which dumped me like a sack of moldy potatoes. My plans of purchasing a nice home theater system for my dorm were annihilated and scattered into the wind like so many grains of MDF. My spirits may have been browbeaten, yet were not destroyed. I decided to scale back my aspirations and began shopping for a nice, but fairly inexpensive, pair of loudspeakers. My quest brought me through the realms of Infinity, JBL, and some others.

Above: What? I can build my own speakers and only have to drop a few thousand on a complete woodshop? Tell me more!
Ultimately, I was inspired by a buddy of mine to go ahead and build a pair for myself (he has a woodshop in his basement). Thus I began researching speaker design at the library, through the Internet, and of course taking notes from books at Barnes and Noble. To say the least I was swamped. Never did I realize that there was so much involved in this. No wonder it's a hobby that consumes so many people's very souls within its maniacally laughing aura. In other words, there was no chance that I would be able to design and build a very nice pair without much more practice and at least some test equipment -- in the very limited time that I had. It of course does not help that my friend lives about three and a half hours from home.

Somehow I ended up stumbling onto the Parts Express Technical Forum. The response from audiophile-hobbyist-enthusiasts to my queries was astounding at the very minimum. It amazed me that people were actually HAPPY to help me. After a line of questioning and a few correspondences I had decided to take on The Reverend's Dayton III MTM project.

Some of those who frequent the discussion board were interested in some sort of diary documenting my sojourn into the world of speaker building - Look what they've done! I hope that this site helps others just like me to get a head start on building the Dayton III's (and maybe even some other speaker design). Although The Rev's plans are fairly complete, you can't go straight from them to cutting. (Well, those with MY level of experience can't go straight to cutting.) This Web site shall hopefully fill in those gaps.

Enjoy,
Alan

PS. Thanks for taking all the guesswork out of this for us, Wayne! (And of course for giving this site a home.) [note from Wayne... thank you Alan!]
