The following list may look strikingly familiar to those who have perused Wayne's site. So if you want to randomly send money to someone because of this list, send it to him :). I have fixed a tiny error in one of the quantities and also added an extra option of which he informed me.
All quantities listed are for a speaker PAIR. The part # is listed so that the items can be quickly added to your shopping cart at Parts Express. We've made it easy for you get rid of some of that pesky annoying money...
| Part # | Description | Qty. | Unit Price |
| | Required Bits | | |
| 295-305 | 6 1/2" woofer | 4 | $15.40 |
| 275-070 | 1 1/8" silk dome tweeter | 2 | $15.50 |
| 266-330 | .60mH, 14awg air core inductor | 2 | $8.80 |
| 266-806 | .20mH, 18awg air core inductor | 2 | $2.40 |
| 266-814 | .40mH, 18awg air core inductor | 2 | $2.90 |
| 027-416 | 2.7uF PP capacitor | 2 | $1.48 |
| 027-424 | 6.8uF PP capacitor | 2 | $2.25 |
| 027-410 | 1.0uF PP capacitor | 2 | $1.15 |
| 027-426 | 8.2uF PP capacitor | 2 | $2.75 |
| 027-352 | 47uF non-polar electrolytic capacitor | 2 | $0.90 |
| 027-458 | .47uF film and foil bypass capacitor | 2 | $1.38 |
| 004-4 | 4 ohm non-inductive resistor | 2 | $1.50 |
| 004-8 | 8 ohm non-inductive resistor | 2 | $1.50 |
| 004-20 | 20 ohm non-inductive resistor | 2 | $1.50 |
Here's your first option: Replace those last three resistors in the list above with those manufactured by Mills (below) and apparently it should produce an increase in audio quality. (on higher-end components) Is it worth the additional $12 investment? I have no clue... but I did it anyway!
| Part # | Description | Qty. | Unit Price |
| | Your First Optional Upgrade | | |
| 005-4 | Mills 4 ohm non-inductive resistor | 2 | $3.50 |
| 005-8 | Mills 8 ohm non-inductive resistor | 2 | $3.50 |
| 005-20 | Mills 20 ohm non-inductive resistor | 2 | $3.50 |
Option Number Two: Add a bypass in parallel to the two capacitors in the high-pass part of the crossover - another "peformance enhancer" that will set you back about $3.52. Did I do it? Yeah, what the heck?
| Part # | Description | Qty. | Unit Price |
| | Your Second Choice | | |
| 027-452 | .10uF film and foil bypass capacitor | 4 | $0.88 |
For your convenience: Why not pick up the following few items from Parts Express as well?
| Part # | Description | Qty. | Unit Price |
| | More Required Stuff | | |
| 260-302 | Binding post terminal | 2 | $2.95 |
| 260-316 | Acoustic foam | 2 | $4.80 |
| 260-317 | AcoustaStuf | 1 | $9.75 |
The Grand Total: Purchasing all of the parts above and splurging on the upgrades will cost you just under $200. Buying only the first list of required parts will save you nearly $50. (You still need the last three items to complete the project)
And you thought you were safe...
In order to complete the job as pictured you'll need all of the following. (Most can be found at Lowe's and Home Depot.) Some of these items are not required (but still suggested) and have been denoted with a "**". Items that can be traded out in lieu of some other option have been marked with a "??".
Above: OK, now what do I do with all this?
|
- Three 2'x4' sheets or equivalent of 3/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
- 16" of 3" internal diameter PVC piping
- Thirty-two 1 1/2" wood or sheet metal screws - Size '8' should work well. (or Forty-Eight if ya wanna go all the way.)
- Silicon Caulk
- Wood Glue (Something like Titebond or a Polyurethane glue)
- A 3/8" rabbetting router bit
- A 1/2" rabbetting router bit
- A 1/2" corner round router bit
- A container of wood filler
- ?? A nice looking wood veneer
- ?? A stain of your choice
- ?? A protective and decorative finish
- ** Some hot glue ammunition
- Enough solder to build a couple crossovers
- Some 16awg speaker wire (from Radioshack)
That's it! I swear. This last slew of materials will easily siphon another $150 or more from your coffers. Unless you screw up badly... this is where it ends. Of course, you can upgrade those router bits from steel to carbide if you're willing to spend four to ten times more per bit ($7 or $60). I admit that this is an option that I did not pursue. Do I wish I had? No.
Update: I have found a carbide 1/2" rabbet bit for $27 at Lowe's! (This has been one of the most frustrating parts to locate. I spent a few weeks trying to find a high-speed-steel version, but to no avail.)
