The Walkthrough - Rabbet

If this is the image that was conjured in your head when you saw the word 'rabbet'... Please click here. :)

OK OK, you can stop rolling your eyes now. Please?

Anyway, this is probably one of the most straight forward steps of the whole process. Just attach the appropriate bit to your handy dandy router and go. As always, I suggest you practice on some scrap before mangling the real thing. Quite honestly, we almost always made some kind of mistake the first time we tried anything. I'm infinitely glad that we always used a bit of scrap for each first. Keep in mind that you could save a bunch of money on rabbeting bits by making multiple passes with a straight bit set to the proper depth. If you decide to excercise this option - don't cut out the center until you've finished with the rabbets - or you won't have a fulcrum to spin around!!
